Ultrasound-Guided Breast Biopsy
What is an ultrasound-guided breast biopsy?

Your breast ultrasound exam showed an area of concern your healthcare provider wants evaluated more closely with biopsy. A sample of tissue will be taken from your breast using ultrasound equipment in order to accurately locate the abnormal area. The tissue is then sent to the lab for analysis. This type of biopsy usually does not leave a scar.

How long will it take?

The procedure will take approximately one hour. You will be able to return to your normal activities within a few hours.

What will happen during the biopsy?
  • You will lie on an exam table.
  • The radiologist will move a small wand (transducer) over your breast to locate the abnormal area.
  • When the area of concern in your breast is seen on the monitor screen, the radiologist will clean and numb the skin above that area. A small incision will be made and a biopsy needle will be advanced to the lesion. Several core samples of the lesion will be removed.
  • At the completion of the biopsy, compression will be applied to your breast and a dressing will be placed on the incision. You will be given an ice pack to put inside your bra to control swelling and pain.
A biopsy is usually not painful, but you may take Tylenol if you have any discomfort.

How accurate is this procedure?

Because the radiologist can see the lesion during the procedure, the results are very accurate. The results of your procedure will be reviewed by the radiologist who performed the procedure and correlated with the pathology results to verify the correct area was sampled.

Are there any restrictions before the exam?

Do not take aspirin three days prior to the biopsy. If you are on blood thinners, please discuss this with your healthcare provider.

When will I know the results?

Your healthcare provider should receive the results from the lab in one to two working days. Your healthcare provider will call you. If you do not hear from your healthcare provider in two days, please call your healthcare provider's office. Our nurse will also call you the day after the biopsy to see how you are doing.
