Stereotactic Breast Biopsy
What is a stereotactic breast biopsy?

Your mammogram showed an area of concern your healthcare provider wants evaluated more closely with biopsy. A sample of tissue will be taken from your breast using a computer-aided needle, which targets the area of concern. Multiple core samples are obtained with a special needle. The specimen is then sent to the lab for analysis. This type of biopsy usually does not leave a scar.

How long will it take?

The procedure will take one to two hours. You will be able to return to your normal activities within a few hours.

What will happen during the biopsy?
  • You will lie on your abdomen on a specially designed table for the entire exam. We will help you find a comfortable position, as it is important to minimize movement during the procedure.
  • The procedure will be done using a computer, a mammography machine and a special breast core biopsy needle. Together these will accurately pinpoint the lesion in your breast, minimizing the amount of tissue removed.
  • The radiologist will numb the skin on your breast around the area of concern. A small incision will be made and a biopsy needle will be advanced to the lesion. Several core samples of the lesion will be removed.
  • At the completion of the biopsy, compression will be applied to your breast and a dressing will be placed on the incision. You will be given an ice pack to put inside your bra to control swelling and pain.
A biopsy is usually not painful, but you may take Tylenol if you have any discomfort.

How accurate is this procedure?

For calcifications, specimen x-rays are taken to verify adequate sampling before sending to lab. Each case is reviewed by the radiologist who performed the procedure and correlated with the pathology results to verify the correct area was sampled. To date, the Breast Center of Suburban Imaging has performed over 4000 stereotactic breast biopsies.

Are there any restrictions before the exam?

Do not take aspirin three days prior to the biopsy. If you are on blood thinners, please discuss this with your healthcare provider.

When will I know the results?

Your healthcare provider should receive the results from the lab in one to two working days. Your healthcare provider will call you. If you do not hear from your healthcare provider in two days, please call your healthcare provider's office. Our nurse will also call you the day after the biopsy to see how you are doing.
