Myelograms
What is a myelogram?

A myelogram is a diagnostic procedure, which requires contrast media to be injected into the spinal canal under x-ray guidance. X-ray images are then made for the radiologist to determine if there are any possible abnormalities.

A CT scan will follow this injection to add detailed anatomic information. X-ray and CT images compliment each other for evaluation of the area of interest.

How long does the test take?

Plan to be in our clinic for approximately 2 hours. This time is used for patient teaching, exam preparation, myelogram, CT scan and recovery time.

Does a myelogram hurt?

Most patients report a pressure sensation after the placement of the local anesthetic. Very few patients report any long-lasting painful sensations.

What are some of the possible side effects/complications?

Occasionally, patients will have a post myelogram headache. As with any procedure involving a needle there is a very small risk of infection or bleeding.

How do I prepare for the myelogram?

Food and fluids:
  • Do not eat solid foods for 3 hours prior to the exam.
  • Do not drink alcohol.
  • Drink clear liquids (water and juices) prior to the examination.
Medication:
  • Certain medications can make you slightly more susceptible to seizures and should not be taken for 48 hours before or 24 hours after a myelogram. These include many of the anti-depressants, anti-psychotics and MAO inhibitors. Please check with your physician before this procedure to discuss the medications you are using.
  • Take your regular medicine, such as antihypertensive medication, on the morning of the examination.
  • Bring a list of your medications to the clinic.
Pre-procedure process:
  • Bring a family member or friend to drive you home.
  • A staff member will interview you prior to the examination.
  • After you change into a procedure gown and empty your bladder, you will be taken to the fluoroscopy room.
  • You will lie on your stomach on an x-ray table. A pillow will be placed underneath your stomach to help straighten your spine making it easier to place the needle.
  • Your back will be washed with a cleansing solution to prevent infection. A small amount of local anesthetic may be used. The radiologist will put a small needle into your back and inject the contrast. You may be asked to roll gently into different positions to obtain the images.
What should I do after the examination?
  • Drink plenty of fluids to flush your body of the x-ray dye.
  • Do not drink alcohol until the next day.
  • Medicines that were not allowed for 48 hours prior to the examination may be re-started 24 hours after the myelogram. Continue to take your regular medications.
  • In order to minimize the risk of a post myelogram headache, it is recommended that you remain lying down, with your head slightly elevated, the remainder of the day.
  • Avoid rigorous activity the day after the examination.
  • Do not drive an automobile until the next day.
  • Have someone stay with you for the first 12 hours to observe in case you need help.
