General X-Ray
X-ray imaging is the fastest and easiest way for a healthcare provider to view and assess the chest, bones, and other structures of the body.

Chest x-rays assess the heart, lungs, and the chest wall. Bone x-rays are useful for viewing fractures of bones, joint, or spine injuries. X-ray images can also be used to diagnose and/or monitor the progression of other diseases.

Computerized radiography (CR) uses a computer to generate a digital image. This digital image can be printed on film or can be transmitted via a computer.

Patient Preparation

There is no special preparation required for most exams. You may be asked to change into a gown before your examination. You will also be asked to remove jewelry, eyeglasses and any metal objects that could show up on the images and overlap important findings. You should inform your healthcare provider or x-ray technologist if there is any possibility of pregnancy.

Patient Experience

Radiography involves exposing a part of the body to a small dose of radiation to produce an image. This radiation amount is a fraction of the x-ray dose that was required in the early days of radiology.

X-ray imaging itself is painless. Your exam will be performed by a highly skilled technologist. You will be positioned on the examination table and a film holder (cassette) will be placed under the table in the area of the body to be imaged. The technologist steps behind a radiation barrier and you will be asked to hold your breath and not move for a few seconds. Any movement could blur the image. The radiographic equipment sends an x-ray beam through the body to expose the film. The technologist may reposition you for another view and the process is repeated.

When your x-rays are completed, you will be asked to wait until the technologist checks the images for adequate exposure and motion.

After Your Exam

Your x-ray images will be interpreted by a board certified radiologist and the finding will be reported to your healthcare provider. Your healthcare provider will contact you to discuss the results.
