X-rays can’t see soft tissue such as the digestive tract. To acquire an x-ray of these organs, it is necessary to use a contrast agent. Imaging the upper digestive tract, often called an “upper GI series,” includes the organs from the mouth to the beginning of the small intestine. The contrast agent is taken orally. Imaging the lower digestive tract, often called a “barium enema,” includes the colon and rectum. The contrast agent is administered as an enema at the time of your imaging appointment.
Before Making Your Appointment Let the scheduler know about any of the following: - Any previous surgeries
- Pregnancy – known or possible
- Allergies
- Current medications
Patient Preparation
You must have with you: - Previous x-rays if requested by your healthcare provider's office
- Your appointment form
- Complete insurance information including your insurance card
Because the images are of your digestive tract, it is important for you to follow the special dietary instructions provided by your healthcare provider and/or Suburban Imaging.
Patient Experience
Your exam will be performed by a radiologist and assisted by a highly skilled technologist. They will explain the procedure and answer any questions. You will be asked to lie on the exam table and you may be asked to shift positions occasionally to capture the clearest images.
After Your Exam
Your images will be interpreted by a board certified radiologist and the finding will be reported to your healthcare provider. Your healthcare provider will contact you to discuss the results.
